Children brave the rain to take part in sports festival

Hundreds of children and young people from across South Gloucestershire descended on the South Gloucestershire and Stroud College WISE campus for the 11th Festival of Youth Sport on Saturday July 7.
In the run up to the day, children have been receiving coaching in various sports at their own schools before competing in the biggest sports day of its kind organised for youngsters in the West.
The event was officially opened by Cllr Ian Boulton, Vice Chairman of South Gloucestershire Council, along with TV presenter Sherrie Eugene Hart. Sponsors Airbus provided some added entertainment when employee Tim Cooke and friends skydived into the arena and local bhangra group RSVP lead a lively procession around the track before the event was officially declared open.
Braving the wet weather, young people competed in a variety of sports including athletics, pop lacrosse, tri golf, KS1 multi-skills, multi-skills tennis and girls cricket.

Girls cricket - St Anne's Primary School, Oldland Common
Tri golf - St Stephen's Juniors, Kingswood
KS1 multi skills - Raysfield Infant School, Chipping Sodbury
Pop lacrosse - St Barnabas Primary, North Common
Fairplay awards were presented to teams who showed great sportsmanship on the day including TyndalePrimary School in Yate, St Michael's Primary School in Winterbourne, HanhamAbbotsJuniorSchool in Hanham and The Tynings School in Kingswood.

Tomorrow (Thursday 12 July) is the last in the series of three sporting events organised by South Gloucestershire Council. With the spring and summer events complete, our Come and Try event features sports for people with a disability and/or sensory impairment including wheelchair basketball and polly bat table tennis. This event also takes place at the WISE campus, New Road, Stoke Gifford with a media opportunity at 11am featuring Paralympic shooter Karen Butler from Bradley Stoke.
