Increase in Fatal Road Accidents

The Chief Fire Officers Association notes with disappointment figures released this week by the Department of Transport which shows that in 2011 road deaths increased by 3% (the first increase since 2003) and that serious injuries rose by 2% (the first increase since 1994).
In addition, car occupant deaths rose by 6%, pedestrian deaths by 12% and serious injuries among cyclists by 16%.
Chief Fire Officer Dave Etheridge, who is the CFOA lead for Road Safety, said: "Every day we attend horrific incidents on our roads so that is why Fire and Rescue Services up and down the UK are now starting to become more and more involved with activities to make our roads safer through educating people of all ages.
"We are now working hard with other stakeholders so that we can make a difference to these figures in the future as we recognise how our unique brand can help address the problem of road deaths and injuries particularly involving young people."
