NEW FEATURE - SERIALISED BOOK FROM
GAMLINGAY & DISTRICT WRITERS' GROUP
This is a synopsis of a story that has been written by Tracey Goodwin, Chair of Gamlingay & District Writers' Group.
Over the next few weeks, I am "trialling an idea". I am going to be serialising this story and I will publish a synopsis of each chapter with a link to a pdf of the full chapter. You can then download it to your PC, book-reader, etc. The chapter synopsis and link follows after the full story synopsis.
Your thoughts on this idea would be most welcome ... good or bad!!!
The novel is slightly futuristic, and concerns a woman, Fia, who is fast approaching thirty, her brother Brian and her new colleague, Colin, all of whom are disenchanted by their brutally hard office life.
Fia's company put chemicals in the water fountain and in the drinks machine to force employees to work unnaturally hard, and Brian's employer, Cybercorps, is forcing him to put in such long hours that he is about to have a breakdown. Fia is also struggling very hard to make ends meet, and has become accustomed to going to bed hungry and running out of petrol at inopportune moments.
They find a temporary doorway to another world and are captured by the indigenous species, who treat them extremely harshly. The three, unaccustomed to more than office work, are made to carry out hard agricultural labour which nearly kills them, and which does actually kill some of the other captives.
The protagonists meet several other abductees and form friendships with them. They have all suffered mental or physical damage as a result of their lives on Earth, and it is only in the far more austere environment of the alien world that their wounds can begin to heal.
The technology plays a minor role in the novel- my main theme is the way that human beings can adapt in order to survive, and become strengthened by unpleasant circumstances.
A tentative romance develops between Fia and her colleague, and I have explored the relationships between the other members of their group.
At first, the protagonists were trying their hardest to get back to Earth, and they are surprised to realise that they prefer their life on the alien planet.
Eventually they realise that they can cope with life on Earth if they apply the same grit and determination that they have learnt during their abduction, and Fia and her friends return home.
Fia, the protagonist, is introduced. The office environment is explained. At her place of work (The Pit) the air and water is laced with performance enhancing chemicals so that staff can produce a higher volume of work. Colin joins the office, and is just as disenfranchised with the harsh regime as Fia. Little Miss Stress (LMS) the strict manager is introduced.
After work, Fia goes out for a drink with her brother, Brian, who works for Cybercorps. The conditions there are even worse, and Fia is worried about Brian's gaunt appearance. Brian confides that he is having issues with his special project, to do with invisibility.
Fia drives home, and her serious financial problems, (her motivation for sticking at her job) are explained. Fia finds her neighbour, a confused old lady who used to work for the Ministry of Defence, wandering around on her property talking about aliens, which is not an unusual occurrence.
