Gamlingay & District Writers' Group
Newsletter - July 2012
A very positive evening - and we seem to have reached a point where we are all enjoying our writing. The group's aim is to improve our writing by encouraging each other - and we're definitely achieving our objective. Thank you to Sarah for hosting.
No new members this month, but the people whose paths hadn't previously crossed introduced themselves to each other.
2. Review of Targets
The group has started to view the targets more as an added bonus than a chore, which is a fantastic attitude!
The Chair has succeeded in finishing the first chapter of her fifth novel. Her aim for this month is to finish the second chapter, and think of a plan for promoting novels 1-4. She has also sent her ‘Train rant' story to two London newspapers.
Sarah has not yet heard back from the publishers regarding ‘The Derwent Inheritance' and ‘the Evacuee'. She has made a great start on her very exciting new book - the eagerly awaited Vincenzi Brothers.
Keith W is still considering entering a competition.
Keith G succeeded in his aim of finishing July's story on time, and now aims to do the same with August's story.
Martin D has actually written most of a short story, & it might even see the light of day eventually!
Mike is hoping to collate stories for a booklet, and has over 70 to choose from! He also wants to finish his cruise story.
Jackie is aiming to submit something in time for next month's meeting.
Sally has the same aim as Jackie. It can sometimes be a challenge to start writing again after a break, so well done for trying.
Lez is hoping to work on the structure of his yoga novel.
Well done, everyone, for having such a positive attitude towards the targets.
3. Competition News
Jackie entered her funeral parlour story in the Bridport Prize competition. Lez has been published in a yoga magazine. Keith W has had a story published in a shooting magazine, and been paid for it. What's more - he might even become a regular columnist! We're all finding our way up the ladder to a wider audience.
4. Other News
Speaker - the Chair has contacted one potential speaker, who has failed to respond. She tried another, who was a tutor at Wordfest, and the person they recommended has so far failed to respond. The Chair will continue her efforts to hunt down a speaker.
Blog - the Chair has started this - it's nothing more complicated than a thread on our website. So far, it's only her blogging away & it's getting lonely on there, so please feel free to join her! Add your thought of the day, or a line about a current project?
Former members - the Chair has contacted four former members, and three of them have responded. All are alive and well, and one has even started writing again! Welcome back, Val!
5. Discussion of Work
We noticed this month that only one or two stories were on the topic, which was ‘Personal Ads'. Does this matter? No it doesn't! The purpose of the group is for it to stimulate us to write, so as long as we're writing, it's all good! On topic; off-topic...it doesn't matter at all, as long as we're enjoying our work. After all, variety is the spice of life. If anything, it's encouraging that we can come up with our own ideas.
*************REMINDERS FOR NEXT MONTH**************
The cut-off point for submitting work will be the Tuesday before the meeting, i.e. Tuesday 31st July 2012. If you submit work after this date, then it will be carried forward to the following month. It is intended that the cut-off point should give us more time to review incoming work.
6. Aims for the coming month
The topic for 7th August is The Journey. Tell us about a journey. Is it one you've really been on or an imaginary trip? We're not worried, as long as it's a good story!
The deadline is 31 July 2012. When circulating work, please use the distribution list on the e-mail which sends the monthly newsletter-the Chair reviews it every month before sending the newsletter, removing dormant members and adding new one, so it will be the most up to date list. Some amendments have been made this month.
Please remember to put your name on your work and number the pages.
7. Any Other Business?
(i) Venue - Sally. Please contact the Chair or Sally if you need directions
(ii) Summer BBQ - Keith W has very kindly offered to host a BBQ at a date to be decided. He has circulated some suggested dates, so please respond and come along! Plus-ones are welcome.
(iii) Writers' Retreat - this is still being investigated. While in theory it's a great idea to have a writing day, the practicalities are proving harder to organise.
See you all in August! Happy writing!!
