Thousands Have Their Say on Libraries

Author: Mike Donaldson, Media Officer, CBC Published: 1st February 2012 16:22

Biggleswade LibraryThe Future of Libraries, the second part of the council's public consultation on the library service, was recently completed with more than 2,200 local people and library users having had their say on the next steps for their local library.

The consultation was part of a review that recognises that libraries are at the heart of local communities in Central Bedfordshire - providing access to information, learning and resources for all ages. The council wants to ensure that the service remains fit for the 21st century, making best use of modern technology so everyone can benefit.

Cllr Brian Spurr, Central Bedfordshire Council's Executive Member for Sustainable Communities Services, said: "We would like to thank everyone who participated in the recent consultation and last summer's Big Library Debate. Your views are very important to us and it is clear from your responses just how much you value your local library service.

"We want to make it clear that the council will not be closing any libraries. The Future of Libraries aimed to help improve the services which our local libraries offer, modernising them, making them even more accessible to the local community and encouraging more people to regularly use them.

"Like many services across the country, the library service in Central Bedfordshire faces significant challenges. We need to find ways to save money and continue to deliver - improve and modernise - a valued service."

All the responses we received will be used to inform the 15 year Library strategy which will be presented to the council in spring 2012 and where a final decision will be agreed.

The consultation started on 22 October 2011 and closed on 18 January 2012
