National School Meals Week in Reading

Reading's schools celebrated National School Meals Week.
The week started on Monday, October 13, with an official launch event at Micklands Primary School, in Caversham, from 11.30am.
Cllr Peter Beard, the Mayor of Reading, and Mayoress, Mrs Cynthia Beard, was the special guests at the event, which included a special menu, a range of fun activities, goodie bags and prizes.

Reception class children and their parents received free school meal.
On Monday, players from Reading Rockets basketball team visited George Palmer Primary School, in Whitley, to highlight the importance of good nutrition and a balanced diet for sportsmen and women.
They ran a fitness session and all children at the school received free tickets to a Rockets match.
On Tuesday, the Rockets visited Manor Primary School, on Wednesday, they visited EP Collier Primary, on Thursday Katesgrove Primary and on Friday, they visited Wilson Primary School.
Also on Tuesday, The Avenue Centre, in Tilehurst, host the first meeting of a new Parents' Forum on School Meals, which will run from 6pm to 8.30pm. The aim is to create a group who can represent the views of parents across Reading on issues about school meals.
Guest speaker at this event will be leading school food expert Lindsay Graham.
On Wednesday, the Mayor and Mayoress visited EP Collier Primary for a special school meals celebration, which include a special menu, a range of fun activities, goodie bags and prizes. On Friday, they went at Wilson Primary for a similar event and the Mayor presented a new school dining table to the school for their work on promoting school meals and healthy eating.
Across all Reading primary schools, Wednesday is "school meals winsday" with goodie bags at each site and meals reduced from £1.70 to £1.50.
Jon Hartley, Lead Councillor for Education and Lifelong Learning, said: "Healthy, nutritious school meals can make a real difference to a child's wellbeing and achievements. It is great to see the vital importance of school meals being celebrated in this way, and here in Reading we have plenty to celebrate, as our school meals service continues to set the national pace."
