A rugby fan from Northamptonshire has launched a social enterprise that helps rugby clubs to raise money by hosting a sausage and cider festival.
Crispin Slee is chairman of the mini and junior section at Towcestrians RFC and hit on the idea after staging the inaugural Towcester Sausage and Cider Festival.
Crispin, who also plays, coaches and referees rugby, said: “A sausage and cider festival was completely unheard of in Towcester before we put one on.
“In spite of its novelty and in spite of the British summer which did its best to put us off, we had around 3,000 people through the club doors during the day.
“We didn’t charge people to enter but if we had – even it if was just £1 – it would have made a huge contribution to club funds.
“I immediately realised that it would be quite simple to pick up the festival and put it down in other rugby clubs to help them raise money too.”
Crispin has now launched The Sausage and Cider Festival Company and a number of rugby clubs in the East Midlands have already expressed an interest.
A PR and marketing man by profession, Crispin holds a Masters degree in communication and puts on and promotes the festival.
He added: “All a rugby club has to do is to provide the venue and provide some volunteer effort to help run the event itself.
“We bring the sausages, the cider, provide the live music and pay for putting on the event so as far as we’re concerned, it’s a fantastic opportunity for clubs.”
Sam Rouse, Rugby Development Officer for the RFU in the East Midlands, said: "This is a very interesting initiative.
“There isn't a rugby club in the land that wouldn't welcome the chance to raise some extra funds. It has great potential."
