Aylesbury College is the first college in Thames Valley to welcome a search arch, for the day, in a bid to educate the students and raise awareness about knife crime and the dangers of carrying an offensive weapon.
Thames Valley Police is one of ten forces from England and Wales to be granted extra money to help in the fight against knife crime from the Home Office.
"The search arch is another tool the police use in trying to prevent any potential incidents and raise awareness about the dangers of carrying offensive weapons. It sends a clear message out to everyone that we will not tolerate violent crime in Aylesbury.Thames Valley Police will be focusing on using the £150,000 to fund preventative work in collaboration with the New Destiny Trust in schools and colleges across Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire.
The proactive operation which took place today (11/11), has seen over 1,000 students pass through the search arch this morning- an electronic device which is able to detect people carrying weapons.
No-one was found to be in possession of a weapon.
PC Graham Briggenshaw said: "Working with the full co-operation of the college, the operation went smoothly and was very well received.
"We are pleased that no weapons have been found. I can reassure the public that this is typical of the results we've had when using the search arch at other venues in our area. However, we will carry out similar operations in the future to ensure that our educational institutions, bars and clubs remain safe places to be."
