Cllr Marland outside Nationwide in Wolverton Residents in Wolverton have been left shocked after customers received letters on Thursday telling them their Nationwide branch is closing. But local councillor Pete Marland has said the area will not let it go without a fight.
Local customers received a letter in the post on Thursday saying the Wolverton branch has been earmarked to close. They will now be expected to use the City Centre or Stony Stratford branch. It is believed staff were only informed at the same time and that they had no prior warning.
Nationwide have said that they believe the branch is declining in what will be seen as yet another blow to Wolverton High Street, which is set to undergo a major overhaul in the coming years.
However local councillor and Labour Group Leader Peter Marland has said that the community will not let it go without a fight and will be asking Nationwide bosses to meet with him and community leaders to discuss the situation.
Cllr Peter Marland said:
"I was totally shocked, as a customer, to open my letter telling me the branch was closing. Nationwide is a Building Society and mutual, yet I'm not aware of any consultation with staff or customers in the area on the closure."
"The idea that this is a declining branch doesn't ring true. The area is set to have a massive revamp over the next few years with the redevelopment of the Agora site and hopefully the Neighbourhood Plan that all sections of the community have worked so hard on."
"I have therefore written to Nationwide to ask for an emergency meeting to discuss the issues, as I don't think we should let the branch close without a fight. Our High Street needs a thriving financial institution for local people and local businesses. I'm hoping the community will pull together and join me in asking Nationwide to have a re-think"
