City MP defends threatened Milton Keynes libraries in Parliament

Residents of Stony Stratford and Woburn Sands have been actively campaigning to save their libraries from closure in the proposed cost-saving measures of Milton Keynes Council.
Speaking during a debate in Parliament on the Localism Bill, Iain Stewart, MP for Milton Keynes South (pictured right), challenged the Shadow Communities Secretary, Caroline Flint MP, who seemed to allege that the Bill would do nothing to save libraries or other local services that maybe under threat.
Mr Stewart said: "In two parts of my constituency, Stony Stratford and Woburn Sands, the libraries are under threat and the town councils are putting forward exciting plans to take over the ownership and running of those vital local services. That is the kind of imaginative locally based solution that we need to protect the fabric and integrity of our local areas."
The MP, who warmly supports this Bill, argued in the House that Milton Keynes would, for the first time, have truly liberating powers to shape its own future as a result of the Bill.
He added: "I particularly welcome the Bill's provisions for genuine community engagement in the shaping and the nature of new housing areas - the density of housing, how many parking spaces are needed, the green spaces, what shops and services are required."
