Milton Keynes' Rugby League team made their debut appearancein the Rugby League Conference's Eastern Regional Division on Saturday, but suffered a 24-40 opening day defeat to Bedford Tigers at Emerson Valley.
Bedford - last season's league leaders with a vastly experienced side, came into the game keen to make amends after suffering their own opening day defeat the previous weekend at the hands of North Herts Crusaders.
MK Wolves started the game brightly enough - Former Bedford Tiger and MK Wolves' player-coach Scott Aspinall deftly sidestepping through the Bedford defence to set up Centre Simon Read who opened the scoring with MK Wolves' first ever competitive try after just two minutes.
Going behind so early seemed to shock the Tigers into action, and they responded immediately as their experience showed and they began to build momentum, running in three quick unanswered tries as they capitalised on MK's errors.
On the half-hour mark, Aspinall again showed his rugby league guile by scoring under the posts, which he duly converted, but Bedford struck once more before the break to make the half-time score 10-30.
The second half saw a fired-up Wolves eager to cut out the mistakes of the first half, but it was Bedford who scored early in the 2nd period.
However, Milton Keynes's battling spirit, which has characterised the squad in pre-season, finally began to show as both Chris Melly and Michael Whitehead hit back for the Wolves to reduce the defecit. Bedford struck again, but Whitehead ran in a second try to bring the final score to MK Wolves 24-40 Bedford Tigers.
Speaking after the match, player-coach Scott Aspinall commented, "We just need to cut out those little mistakes that we made at crucial points in the game that led to Bedford scoring - and that will come with experience. We showed great determination to fight back all game and can be proud that we won the second half 14 - 10. It just shows that Rugby League is an 80 minute game and we have to make sure we're switched on for the full 80."
"However, for a first game, the boys played superbly in a very physical match. We were massively heartened by the big local crowd that came to support us, and I hope we did MK proud."
MK Wolves will get an early chance of revenge this weekend when they travel to Putnoe Woods, Bedford to face Bedford Tigers away (Saturday 12 May, 2.30pm k-off).
