Ely and District Cycling Club gain more personal bests

In a busy weekend of racing for members of the Ely & District Cycling Club, 12 club members made their way to Cambourne on Saturday for the Team Cambridge 10 mile race on the F2D/10 circuit.

Despite conditions being far from optimal, some fast times were set and several members set new personal bests for that distance.  Rory Havis was the fastest Ely rider on the day, with a time of 21:18, followed by Dan Bromilow (21:23), Paul Sparks (21:30), Darran Bennett (21:51), Martin Holmes (22:09), Derek Ricketts (22:10), John Manlow (22:38), Will Shepherd (23:00), Jon Tully (24:14) and Tom Sykes (25:07).  In the women’s event Zena Palgrave and Alison Holmes finished in times of 23:49 and 27:12 respectively.

It wasn’t plain sailing for everyone, with Will Shepherd and Jon Tully both suffering mechanical problems.  Will was unable to shift into the large chainring on his bike, while Jon suffered a front wheel puncture on this way to the start.

Dan Bromilow, Martin Holmes and Zena Palgrave also set new distance PBs on the day, with Darran Bennett, Will Shepherd and Derek Ricketts setting new course PBs.  The event was won by George Fox of Team Bottrill/HSS Hire with a time of 18:58.

Dan Bromilow and Zena Palgrave were racing again on the Sunday, both doing their first 100 mile time trial in the EDCA District Championships on the B100/4 course in Norfolk.  Zena had a very eventful race, with a crash after 7 miles which caused a rear wheel puncture, a front wheel puncture shortly afterwards and a broken cycle computer mount meaning that she finished the race with her cycle computer held onto her handlebars with gaffer tape.

Zena was able to finish the race thanks to the support provided by Derek Ricketts who was at the race with drinks, food and wheels for the two racers and despite these difficulties she set a new club record for 100 miles with a time of 4:48:40, breaking the record by 35 minutes.  Dan Bromilow had a much less eventful race, finishing in a time of 3:56:57, which turned out to be good enough for 3rd place on the day.

Ely club members also took part in the mountain bike racing at Hintlesham in the sixth round of the Mud Sweat and Gears race series.  John McAndrew achieved the best result of the day, with 8th in the Grand Vets race, and Mikie Burrell finished 15th in the Sport Race.  Charlie Fleet finished in 18th place in the Under-12s race and Gary Fleet was 52nd in the Open Race.
