A14 Huntingdon Railway Viaduct Joint Replacement and Resurfacing Scheme; and
A14 Alconbury to Fen Drayton Repair Work
On behalf of the Highways Agency, I wish to inform you that we shall be shortly be starting work on two schemes on the A14 in Cambridgeshire. The programme for both schemes has been integrated to share the traffic management where possible and to take maximum advantage of the road closures that will be needed.
A14 Huntingdon Railway Viaduct
Work involves the replacement of the bridge joints and the resurfacing of the Viaduct which crosses the East Coast Main Railway Line between A14 Junction 23 (Spittals interchange) and Junction 24 (Godmanchester).
These roadworks are due to commence on the evening of 15 January 2010. The work will require the complete weekend closure of the A14, in one direction at a time, for a period of approximately 6 weekends. The work is weather dependent but the weekends currently planned for closure are as follows:
Eastbound closures: 15 - 17 January, 22 - 24 January and 29 - 31 January 2010.
Westbound closures: 19 - 21 February, 26 - 28 February and 5 - 7 March 2010.
On each of these weekends, the A14 will be closed between junctions 23 and 24 from 10.00pm Friday night through to 6.00am Monday morning.
During the times the A14 is closed, long distance traffic will be diverted via the A1 and the A428.
A14 Alconbury to Fen Drayton Repair Work
At the same time as work takes place on the Huntingdon Railway Viaduct, we will be taking the opportunity to carry out repairs and resurfacing to the worn out carriageway of the A14 at several locations between Alconbury and Fen Drayton.
These roadworks are programmed to commence on Friday 15 January 2010, and will involve weekend night-time closures. Additionally there will be a week of overnight closures currently programmed for the week commencing 8 February 2010. This will be required between Spittals Interchange and Alconbury only.
Proposed working hours for the road closures are:
10.00pm and 6.00am Friday nights
8.00pm and 6.00 am Saturday and Sunday nights
8.00pm and 6.00am Monday to Thursday nights (Spittals to Alconbury only)
During the times these works are taking place on the A14, traffic will follow the diversion routes put in place for the Huntingdon Railway Viaduct scheme (above).
Subject to weight restrictions, there will also be local diversion routes available as follows:
When the A14 is closed between Alconbury and Spittals, traffic will be diverted via the A1 and A14 at Brampton Hut.
During the eastbound resurfacing works between A14 Junction 24 (Godmanchester) and Junction 27 (Fenstanton) local traffic will be able to use the A14 between Junction 27 (Fenstanton) and Junction 31 (Girton). Traffic wishing to enter and leave the Hemingfords, Fenstanton and any other neighbouring villages during this closure will be diverted to use local roads to access the A14.
During the westbound resurfacing works between Junction 28 (Boxworth) and Junction 27 (Fenstanton), local traffic will be able to use the A14 between junctions 31 and 28 and between junctions 27 and 24.
During the weekend closures for the Huntingdon Viaduct works, local traffic will be diverted via St Ives along the A141, A1123 and A1096.
We apologise for any inconvenience that the works may cause. However, we hope that you will understand our need to balance the safe construction of the works, against minimising disruption and inconvenience to the public.
