The Lora Foundation

The majority of children's care homes in Bulgaria are in a sorry state of affairs. Devoid of love or anybody to talk to, most of the children cannot speak as they have not been taught how to and spend most of the day rocking in their chairs for something to do.Many are mentally or physically handicapped, but do not receive the appropriate attention that could help them live their lives to the fullest.
This is a fact that was brought to my attention while watching a documentary called Bulgaria's Abandoned Children about a children's care home BBC4.
So on the 27th July, I shall be flying to Bulgaria to help out at a summer camp for two weeks. The camp will have orphaned children there and, with the help of all the volunteers, we will let them have fun by doing arts and crafts, sport, drama, music and many other things. Basically, letting kids be kids.
The camp is run by an organisation called the Lora Foundation, named after the child the two founders adopted. The Lora Foundation's main objective is to "better the lives of the destitute children in Bulgaria". As well as the summer camps, they do this by:
- Delivering food, shoes and clothes
- Adding heating, playgrounds and proper bathroom facilities in the homes
- Training and equipping the staff of the homes to meet the educational and rehabilitation needs of the children
Before going, I will be attempting to complete two challenges to raise money for the foundaiton:
- A 20km walk on the South Downs, near Goodwood Racecourse on the 10th May
- A motorcycle endurance ride from John O'Groats to Lands End in 1 day in June
