As Summer looms and global warming appears to feature more and more in every day conversation it is time
to act now to prevent dry brown lawns again this year. I find myself writing about drought preventing tips earlier
than ever. Fortunately we have had a wetter than normal winter but on the back of this could follow a dry summer.
Weed Control
A variety of weeds will start to emerge and plague your lawn this month. These are very easily dealt with by spraying with a specialised selective herbicide which kills the weeds and leaved the grass unharmed and able to flourish.
Summer Fertilizer
The lawns will be in need of their summer fertiliser treatment soon to green them up after the rigours of winter. This is best carried in May.
Actions to prevent Drought Symptoms
We all know the problems Drought may cause our lawns. Water the lawn with a sprinkler once per week, but leave on for long enough to saturate the soil.
Aerate/spike lawns so that when lawns are watered the water can get in to the soil rather than sit on the top.
- Feed with a balanced feed to encourage a strong grass plant with strong roots.
- Don't cut grass short always leave at least 1" long.
- Apply a special wetting agent product which will allow water in to the soil profile down to the roots.
