Ear piercing
Ear piercing is one of the oldest forms of body modification to occur with a mummified human body over 5,000 years old being discovered with ear piercings.
In ancient Egypt ear piercing was a sign of wealth and status. In India children younger than five are commonly pierced in elaborate ceremonies and in some cultures ear piercing is carried out as a rite of passage into adult hood. In western cultures it became more popular in the 6o's but even so many famous people such as Shakespeare had their ears pierced. Many tribes believed that having metal earrings near the ear prevented the devil entering their bodies so not only was ear piercing a form of body art or used as a rite of passage there were religious connotations as well.
Not just the Lobe
Today in western culture Ear Piercing is a fashion statement and if you thought ear piercing was just limited to the lobe you are greatly mistaken.

If there is a part of the ear that can be pierced someone will have done it. As with everything though it should be done properly, by a professional with the correct equipment and to the highest standards of hygiene. Some forms of piercing require specialist training and in some cases there are few people prepared to carry out piercing on certain parts of the ear or even body due to the risk of damage and infection.
The traditional and most common place for a piercing is "number 9" the lobule and can be carried out safely by a qualified ear piercing technician.
Ear piercing procedure
The procedure itself takes seconds to complete but an appointment can take roughly 15 minutes as a thorough consultation must be carried out, a record card completed and time taken to discuss the exact positioning of the piercing.
There are certain circumstances where a piercing is contra indicated and would not be carried out these include Diabetes which can lead to poor skin healing and a greater risk of infection, Epilepsy as the stress and shock incurred during the treatment could result in a fit, Circulatory disorders among others.
Modern ear piercing techniques involve the use of a small ear piercing gun which is loaded up with an earring and back clasp, the gun is then placed in position over a mark which indicates where the earring is meant to go the trigger is gently squeezed and the ear is pierced.
Many people are worried that the procedure will hurt but having had the treatment are pleasantly surprised at how quick and painless it actually is. Clearly there is a little discomfort but this is more like a stinging sensation rather than actual pain and the procedure is completed so quickly that you don't have time to think about it.
A professional ear piercer will be registered with the local authority and if you cannot see a certificate of authorisation on the wall ask if you can see it, if they are unable to show you this certificate it would be advisable not to have your ears pierced at that time and find somewhere else to go.
