Saturday 21st November, 2009

Hunts Senior Cup First Round

RAMSEY TOWN 4  EYNESBURY ROVERS 2 (after extra time)

Eynesbury Rovers suffered a shock defeat at Peterborough League side Ramsey Town in the First Round of the Huntingdonshire Senior Cup.

With the sides level at one apiece after 90 minutes the game entered extra time. A disastrous first period for Rovers saw them concede three goals and trail 4-1 after 105 minutes. Dave Goodall netted a last minute goal for Eynesbury but it was too little too late.

Missing Adam Boothby through suspension  Matt Plumb gave a debut to new signing Gavin Batt whilst Ian Dawkes made his 50th first team appearance playing up front alongside Joe Jordan. Dave Goodall made his first start of the season whilst young Shane Smith made his debut as an injury time substitute.

Eynesbury almost took an early lead but Barry Albone's second minute header came back off the crossbar. Joe Jordan's 25 yard shot just cleared the top of the goal before Darren Woodend saw his cross tipped over the bar by Lea Jordan in the Ramsey goal. The hosts took the lead against the run of play when Tom Skidmore's cross was met at the back post for James MacCallum to score in the 27th minute.

Barry Albone almost equalised after rounding the ‘keeper but from a tight angle his shot hit the side netting. Whilst at the other end Ricki Goodale's shot also hit the side netting. Rovers' equaliser came in the 61st minute when Albone forced the ball home from close range after an Eynesbury corner kick to claim his seventh goal of the season. The visitor's went on to dominate play but they could not find a way past Lea Jordan. Twice Albone shot wide whilst Ian Dawkes was twice denied by superb saves by Jordan.

With the scores level after 90 minutes the game went into extra time. Goodale came close to putting Ramsey ahead on two occasions before Tom Skidmore shot past Houseago in the 96th minute to put the hosts ahead. Just two minutes later Goodale slotted home a through ball to make it 3-1 and on the stroke of half time Adam Browne scored Ramsey's fourth. In the second period of extra time Jordan again denied Dawkes before Dave Goodall netted a last minute Rovers goal.
