A message from Bob Eaton Town Mayor of St Neots
Unsung Heroes
I am only three months into my time as Mayor and it has already been a hectic but very enjoyable first few weeks. Both the Deputy Mayor, Fiona Birks and I have attended more than thirty events including the turf cutting at the new St Neots Football Club at Love's Farm, Cambridge Midsummer Fair, Little Acorns Pre-School 10th Anniversary, opening the new Day Nursery at Winhills School, and attending the opening of the new extension at the Hillings, to name but a few.
As Mayor I am privileged to see at first hand the rich and diverse community life of our town. St Neots has many unsung heroes who give their time, energy and considerable talents to help those less fortunate and to ensure that our town has events and activities to offer the old and young alike, as well as those somewhere in between!
I would like to pay tribute to two such local heroes; Jean Searle as Chairman of the St Neots Carnival Committee has put in a huge effort to ensure that our town's show-piece is a success not only for the people of the town to enjoy, but also to raise funds for a number of very worthwhile local charities. You can show your support for Jean and her hard working committee by coming along to the Carnival on 25th August and taking part in the various events which have been organised for that week.
We are also blessed as a town to have had the passion and commitment of a remarkable man over the past few years. Father Roger Arguile, Vicar of St Neots has been a tireless champion and stalwart of numerous events and organisations in St Neots since 1995. He has been, apart from his "day-job", Vice Chairman of the Town Centre Initiative, editor of Priorities, chief organiser of the Ascension Fair, Mayor's Chaplain, the MC of the Christmas Lights Switch on, and one of the leading lights of the fantastic millennium celebration. Roger has announced his retirement and will be leaving St Neots to take the sea air in Norfolk. The town will be the poorer when he leaves us-but he goes with our thanks and best wishes.
These are truly people who give vastly more than they take. They are the life blood of our town Thank you all!
Bob Eaton
