Changes to our Waste & Recycling Collections
| Published: 6th September 2007 13:58 |

From Monday 10th September 2007 the day of the week that your refuse, recycling and green waste is collected will be changing.
These changes to collection days will affect over 60,000 households across the district and although residents will have new collection days to remember, there are many reasons for making these changes:
- Growth over the next few years will see an increase in the number of homes requiring refuse and recycling collections
- The amount of material collected for recycling continues to increase
- We work to ensure an efficient service and deliver value for money to the districts residents
Huntingdonshire District Council has been collecting three different types of waste from the kerbside for over three years now. These are the dry recyclables in the blue bin or green box, garden and kitchen waste in the green bin and normal refuse in the grey bin or blue bags for flats and smaller properties unable to house wheeled bins. All three of these services will experience a change of collection day.
In the last year, the amount of waste collected for recycling has increased dramatically and the residents of Huntingdonshire are now some of the best recyclers in the country, with a recycling rate of 51% for 06/07.
As local residents recycle more and more, the amount of material collected from blue bins, green boxes and green garden waste bins continues to grow, needing more resources, such as collection vehicles and collection teams, whilst the amount a material collected from grey bins (material that cannot be recycled) is reducing, requiring a lower level of resources.
Rescheduling our collection arrangements and changing collection days has many benefits:
- The right levels of resources are available to meet the current and future needs of each type of collection.
- By using the most effective routes we help reduce the mileage travelled and the amount of fuel needed. This, coupled with the fact that the fuel we use for our vehicles is ‘bio diesel' rather than conventional low sulphur diesel, will help to reduce vehicle emissions and the overall carbon footprint of the service as a whole
- The new arrangements will reduce the number of vehicles needed and will generate ongoing savings of £100,000 a year.
Although collection days are changing, we have made sure that all residents green and grey wheeled bin collections fall on the same day of alternate weeks so food waste can be put into either bin in hot weather - a key issue for many local residents.
