Jane Horrocks launches annual card recycling campaign
Actress and keen recycler, Jane Horrocks, teamed up with Recycle Now, the national recycling campaign for England today (Friday 5th January 2007) to officially launch the annual Woodland Trust Christmas Card Recycling Scheme and to announce its collection target for 2007.
90 million cards is the target that has been set by the Woodland Trust and Recycle Now, aiming to beat the publics record recycling efforts last year which saw 82 million cards (a 41% increase on the previous year) recycled during January 2006.
Jane Horrocks said:
More than one billion cards get sent in the UK at Christmas and we want to recycle at least 90 million of them1. Funds raised through this scheme will help the Woodland Trust save woods and trees, and help cut down the amount of waste that traditionally gets binned at this time of year.
The eve of Twelfth Night is when most of us will be thinking about taking down our cards so its a timely reminder from Recycle Now and the Woodland Trust to ask everyone to remember to drop off their cards in the special recycling bins at participating WHSmith, Tesco and TK Maxx stores throughout January.
The bins - at mainland WHSmith high street stores2, Tesco stores (including selected Express) and any TKMaxx store - will be ready to collect cards from today (5th January 2007) and throughout January. Tescos home delivery service will also be taking part in the scheme.
All the cards collected during the campaign are taken to paper mills where they are recycled into brand new paper products, with the money raised helping the Woodland Trust to save woods and trees.
Sue Holden, Chief Executive of the Woodland Trust, says:
Were delighted to team up with Recycle Now and secure Janes support to officially kick-off the 2007 Christmas Card Recycling Scheme.
The public have been tremendous in their support for the Scheme in the past and we are hoping that they will lend us their support again to make the campaign an even bigger success in 2007. Please dont forget to recycle your cards and help us look after the UKs precious native woodlands.
Gareth Lloyd, from Recycle Now, says: Recycling is an easy New Years resolution to keep and recycling our Christmas cards is a great way to get 2007 off to a flying start.
