Composting on the up in Brent
| Published: 24th August 2006 10:19 |
Brent Council recorded that 5,292 tonnes of kitchen waste, garden waste and cardboard was collected in green organic bins between April and July this year, compared with 4,222 during the same period last year.
Now the council which already has one of the highest composting rates in London, with 12 per cent of household waste being composted is keen to increase figures even further.
The council's waste team will be calling on residents in some areas over August to encourage them to use the service properly.
In some areas, contamination of green organic bins is high, meaning organic waste is mixed with other household waste and recyclable materials causing all the contents of the bin to be rejected for recycling.
Cllr Irwin Van Colle, Brent Council's Lead Member for Environment, Planning and Culture, said: "We are pleased that the figures for organic waste collection have risen considerably since in the last year ? this is a testament to the waste team's hard work.
"However, it's important for us to work with residents to get them to separate biodegradable waste from landfill waste. An entire load of green waste can be rejected at the composting plant, if it contains plastic bags or other general rubbish."
Approximately 60 per cent of households in Brent have green organic bins, while those in flats and properties that are difficult to access are provided with a biodegradable sack service. Brent Council offers one of the few waste collection services in London that allows residents to collect kitchen waste along with garden waste.
