Abbey Road 'one of most successful recycling sites in London'
| Published: 11th September 2006 21:49 |
Abbey Road Recycling and Reuse Centre is off the North Circular Road, at the Park Royal junction, and is open Monday to Sunday 8am to 4pm.
It's free to residents, traders can get a 40 per cent discount for recycling some types of waste, and it's also used as a transfer station by waste collection vehicles.
The site was a tip but was refurbished two years ago in order to encourage visitors to separate waste and recycle as much as possible. Drivers go past 25 skips - one for each type of waste material - before they get to the skip for rubbish. Throughout the process, staff are on hand to guide drivers on what goes where. The site is designed to be user-friendly, with clear sign-posting and helpful staff, and is clean and spacious.
In 2005/6, more than 27,000 people used it, depositing over 4,100 tonnes of waste.
As well as cardboard, wood, newspapers, tin cans, glass, plastics, shoes and general household waste you can also take more unusual items like engine oil, cooking oil, mobile phones, toner cartridges, wood, tools, spectacles and, batteries and fridges.
Garden waste is recycled into compost that is then given back to visitors to the site during free offers.
The Abbey Road centre is one of the reasons why Brent has improved its recycling rate from six per cent to 20 per cent in three years. We are now exceeding the Government's target rate of 18 per cent for recycling and aim to raise that to 30 per cent by 2010.
Councillor Irwin Van Colle, Brent Council's Lead Member for Environment, Planning and Culture, said: "The recycling centre at Abbey Road has exceeded our expectations for it. Even so, I urge more of our residents to visit the site with anything that can be recycled ? the centre is really easy to use."
