October jobs in the Garden

Published: 3rd October 2006 23:12
Plant new season stocks of Roses and Soft Fruit.

Sweep leaves as they fall and compost into leafmould.

Finish planting out Wallflowers and other spring bedding.

Plant spring flowering bulbs such as Tulips, Crocus, Allium and Narcissi.

Plant up tubs and baskets with Winter Pansies and small colourful evergreens, to give a bright colourful display throughout the winter months.

Harvest varieties of fruit and vegetables as they become ready.

Lift Dahlia tubers after the first light frost has blackened top growth.

Lift Pelargoniums, Fuchsia and other tender perennials to over winter in a frost free greenhouse, for next spring. Ensure there is adequate ventilation on warm days and inspect weekly for signs of pest and disease.

Check and service greenhouse heaters in preperation for the first frosts.

Continue winter digging if your soil is heavy and wet in winter.

Continue mowing the lawn but raise the height of the cut. Rake out any thatch that has built up over the summer. Apply autumn fertiliser and a turf dressing. Now is also the final chance to sow new lawns from seed and repair any bare patches.
