Election petition hearing

In a short hearing today at Brent Town Hall Mr Richard Mawrey QC determined that Mr Pawan Gupta, a candidate for the Lib Dem party at the local elections in May 2006, was disqualified from standing as he was employed by Brent Council at the time. Mr Gupta is therefore no longer a councillor at Brent. In accordance with the judgement a by-election will take place in Dudden Hill ward to fill the vacancy. A date for this has not been set.

Gareth Daniel, Chief Executive of Brent Council and Returning Officer,
said: "I am pleased that the petition has been
decided. The continuing uncertainty about whether Mr Gupta was duly elected was unsatisfactory for the council and the electorate. I would like to thank the commissioner, the court staff and all the parties to the case for working to ensure that the process of hearing the petition ran smoothly.
