Getting a taste for Oxford University

The Brent Council visit is aimed at raising the aspirations of students who may have the potential to go to the prestigiously renowned Oxford or Cambridge University.
Forty five Year 10 students from 12 Brent Schools have been chosen to be part of the annual visit to Oxford following on from a similar trip to Cambridge University earlier this year.
The scheme has been running for the last three years as part of Aimhigher, a government funded national project which encourages young people to think about the benefits and opportunities of higher education.
Peter Boursnell, Brent Council's Aimhigher co-ordinator, says: "The feedback we get from the students is hugely positive.
"I come away from these trips feeling very proud of these pupils who tend to be both enthusiastic and excellent ambassadors for Brent schools and the council."
During the day students will attend talks by subject specialists who will look at areas of interests which will challenge the young students' minds. They will also have a chance to have a look around the university and learn how you can apply to study there and what courses are available.
Oxford is the oldest university in the English- speaking world and lays claim to a host of famous former pupils which include Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair and Norman Manley, the former Prime Minister of Jamaica, who led his country to independence. The university has delivered education for nine centuries and has about 18,000 students.
