Why not try something different? Walking Works!

That's the message being promoted by 'Walking Works', a new London-wide campaign run by national charity Living Streets, which is being supported by Brent Council and Transport for London.
The campaign will show London's workers that being a bit more active on their daily commute will make them feel better, and give them more control over their lives. And that they can have fun doing it!
To kick off the campaign in style, the first ever Walk to Work Day takes place on Thursday 26 April 2007.
To mark the occasion, Brent Council is organising a number of mini-competitions to promote Walk to Work Day with prizes, including gym membership and other goodies.
Workers for businesses in the borough could win a prize for walking some or part of the way to work. Prizes will be awarded for best photo, the team walking the furthest in total and individual participants will be entered in a prize draw.
The benefits of walking for health, for the environment and for people's pockets are well documented. What's often missing is the encouragement to make it a regular part of their daily lives. Walking Works, supported by Brent, will aim to do just that by encouraging people to commit themselves to walk more and supporting them with advice and motivation.
The campaign will focus on the benefits that regular walking brings. In
particular:
You get time to yourself to clear your head, and leave your worries behind It's a really easy way to fit some exercise into a busy day, which makes you feel good It's good for everyone with less congestion and emissions
Brent Council Senior Sustainable Transport Officer, Mike Evans, said: "Walking as part of our daily journeys, or even once a week, brings great benefits for individuals and for Brent as a whole. We know that local residents are concerned about their health, congestion on our roads, and getting to know their neighbours. Building walking into our daily journey is one way we can help improve all of this."
Tom Franklin, Chief Executive of Living Streets, the national charity running the Walking Works campaign, said: "Join in with people across London and use Walk to Work Day 2007 as an excuse to test run a new and more enjoyable way of getting into work."
Ben Plowden, Programme Director of Travel Demand Management at TfL said: "By working with Living Streets to encourage people to walk part or all of their daily commute, we hope many more people will realise just how quick and enjoyable walking in the Capital can be."
