GREAT BIG NATIONAL SUNFLOWER GROWING CONTEST COMES TO NW10!
| Published: 30th April 2007 19:02 |
With the "Brent in Bloom" competition encouraging everyone to get stuck in and get dirty there is a simple way to brighten up your surroundings.
Community website AboutMyArea.co.uk/nw10 is urging young and old to up tools and join in the fun by planting a sunflower as part of the GREAT BIG NATIONAL SUNFLOWER GROWING CONTEST.
Site Editor Malin Bergstrom is excited about the next few weeks “We want people to really get into the spirit of this contest and have lots of fun.
“There are no restrictions; it will appeal to children, parents, grandparents, business people, schools, literally everyone in the community. You don’t have to own an allotment, or have a big garden – sunflowers are one of the easiest things to grow and by making it easy we hope everyone will join in – green fingers are not essential.
“The task is simple, grow a sunflower – in your garden, in a pot, or whatever you can find, send us pictures and we’ll put updates on the website and the tallest plant at the end of the season will win some great prizes. We will also supply handy hints and tips on growing and lots of other useful information along the way. I can’t wait to see how everyone is doing.
National Marketing Manager for AboutMyArea.co.uk, Nigel Ackroyd is hopeful that sunflowers will soon be popping up in every street, “It would be great to see next door neighbours competing for the biggest plant, even neighbouring streets or schools. We want to turn every corner of every road, close or avenue and see glorious, sunny sunflowers peeping over fences and hedges, lining the front lawns and peering over balconies. And whilst everyone is out in the sunshine having a bit of fun and doing their bit for nature, the communities will benefit too.”
