Hard hats will be part of the uniform for pupils at Wembley Primary School later this month when they take centre stage at a ceremonial event to officially mark the start of work.
Youngsters will help to cut the first piece of turf on the site in East Lane where the new £10 million school is beginning to take shape. The event will start at 2:30pm on May 21 and will also include a singing performance for guests.
Contractors Norwest Holst Limited have already carried out a small amount of demolition and started excavating the foundations.
Pupils will continue to be taught in the existing infant and junior school buildings until they move into the new accommodation on the same site in summer 2008.
Chair of Governors, Mike Turner, says: "In this short ceremony the children of Wembley Primary can share the excitement of breaking the ground in their old playing field where the new school structure will emerge over the next few months.
"The staff and the governors want the children who are now at Wembley Primary to benefit from the process of building a school, as much as they will from the new school itself when it is completed next year."
The new school will boast an all-weather playground, ICT facilities, library area for pupils and the wider community, a special courtyard area for outdoor learning, music and drama, and a large hall available for public use out of school hours. Existing playing fields and playgrounds will be retained and landscaped.
