Brent Makes Music 2007 took place at Wembley Arena on 11 July. This exciting project, co-ordinated by Brent Music Service, involved over 1,300 children from 32 different schools from the Brent to present an exhilarating evening of music.
Providing a truly impressive spectacle for the ears and eyes of the audience, the show brought together the Brent Youth Choir, Brent Youth Orchestra, Brent Percussion Band, a 150 strong recorder group from the Brent Music Service Recorder Programme, Brent Young Musician of the Year 2007 – Savitri Grier, combined Brent Junior Ensembles, massed school choirs, a chamber orchestra, a stage band and fanfare trumpets and cornets.
Trevor Laird (recently seen in Dr Who) was the compere for the evening, guiding the audience through the collection of varied items of the first half and providing the narration for ‘Conjure Tales’ which filled the second half. He commented: “This evening has been an inspiration! To have so many of Brent’s young talent perform to such a high standard at this magnificent venue demonstrates just how much future potential Brent holds for the world of music.”
The audience were offered a programme of music that held something for everyone – Earth, Wind and Fire, J S Bach, Disney, ABBA, Verdi and original works including ‘Conjure Tales’, to highlight just a few. The atmosphere was electric and the audience response to each item was comparable to that of a celebrity concert.
The second half offered a new-edge gospel-style collection of songs with narration which formed the special commission ‘Conjure Tales’. This can only be described as awesome, with the combination of a massed choir of over 1,000 children featuring vocal soloist Natasha O’Donnell, accompanied by a stage band and enhanced with a big-screen presentation of drawings supplied by three of the participating schools.
Paul Fensom, Head of Brent Music Service remarked: “The professionalism of the children was fantastic. Trying to co-ordinate so many performers to present such a variety of pieces was always going to make this an ambitious project, but the positive way they responded to the challenge is to their great credit and resulted in an exceptional evening of music making. We are also extremely grateful to Brent Council who enabled this renowned venue to be made available to us for this event – it really has made it a night that will stay in the children’s memories forever, embracing our intentions to enable music in Brent to be a key part of their future lives.”
