Children dress up for World Book Day

Published: 11th March 2008 14:41

Pupils from St Josephs Roman Catholic Primary School in Harlesden dressed up as their favourite book characters to celebrate World Book Day on Thursday.

The event was held at the school on Goodson Road Harlesden, NW10 9LS, on March 6 to celebrate a love of books and reading.

World Book Day is in its second decade in the UK and Ireland this year. Over this time it has become one of the biggest annual events to promote the enjoyment of books.

Along with the Harlesden event, Willesden Green Library had polish author, Tomasz Kwiatkowski, reading from his novels and talking about his writing experiences on the same day. At Kilburn Library, author Anna Cottrell, read from her book 'Once upon a time in Ghana.'

Brent Council has plenty of other events planned throughout 2008 to celebrate the National Year of Reading and there has never been a time to make the most of your local library.

The council is spending hundreds of thousands of pounds on modernising and improving library buildings in Brent. Following public consultation, library opening hours are also changing to make them more convenient for customers.

There are a number of exciting things happening this year, including:

  • An imaginative programme of event and activities to celebrate the National Year of Reading available at www.brent.gov.uk/libraries
  • The opening of Kingsbury Library Plus on April 14 – a new library in a town centre location with self service facilities that includes a customer contact centre
  • Refurbishment of Neasden Library in partnership with BACES and the One Stop Service
  • Three libraries open seven days a week from the autumn
  • More books, more events, and new facilities

Sue McKenzie, Head of Libraries, Arts and Heritage, says; “Brent’s libraries have so much to offer for all ages and tastes and it's all either free or affordably priced. We are undergoing a major transformation. I urge everyone to join up and see for themselves what it's all about.”

Brent libraries have new stock each week including the top ten bestselling books, DVDs and CDs.
