Football league to launch

Published: 9th February 2007 17:39

Brent Council and local sports students will team up to launch the Premier Street Football League on Friday 16 February at Bridge Park Community Leisure Centre, Harrow Road, NW10.

The council’s Sports Service and students from Wembley High Technology College are organising the football tournament targeting “hard to reach” young people aged 11-to-15 years old.

The fixtures begin the following week at Vale Farm Sports Centre, Watford Road, North Wembley, and will take place at the centre every Friday between 6-8pm for the following five weeks. A presentation evening at Bridge Park Community Leisure Centre on Friday 30 March will mark the end of the league.

At the launch event, teams can register their place in the league. All teams must have a responsible adult to act as their Team Manager to take part in the league.

The Brent Premier Street Football League operated last year in February at Bridge Park Community Leisure and attracted over 70 young males.

The main purpose of the league is to give young people deemed as “hard to reach” the opportunity to participate in a positive, competitive and structured football programme. The league should also give the young people involved the opportunity to enhance their social skills and to foster social inclusion which many young people may encounter as a problem even within their own neighbourhoods.

The sports leaders are assisting on the project to help them achieve the Higher Sports Leaders Award (HSLA). The award equips them with the necessary skills and knowledge needed to run sports activities.

Louisa Housen, Brent Council Sports Development Officer, said: “We hope the teams taking part will enjoy the experience, the sports leaders gain valuable knowledge and experience of planning and delivering an event and the partners feel a part of a project which aims to empower disadvantaged young people”.
