Discover the benefits of going back to work

Residents among the 12,590 Incapacity Benefit recipients in Brent are being invited to explore the benefits of returning to work at a special careers advice fair on Thursday 24 August.
The careers fair at Willesden Green Library, which takes place from 10am to 4pm, will feature talks from a range of employers, such as Sainsbury's, Marks and Spencer and Tesco, about full-time and part-time opportunities, as well as free employment and training advice.
The fair is part of a much wider programme to encourage Incapacity Benefit recipients in Brent to consider going back to work. It is being run by leading welfare-to-work provider WorkDirections, in partnership with Working Links and on behalf of Brent Council's Brent in2work agency.
The voluntary programme sets out the health and financial benefits of being employed and gives reassurance that those people who return to work through the programme will always be better off in employment.
Anyone who joins the programme is able to receive free, one-to-one support from their own personal advisor. They can receive help to build their confidence while identifying jobs that suit their individual circumstances.
The programme also supplies necessary funds for travel costs, clothing and equipment for work, while financial support continues to be offered even after participants return to employment.
Lead member for Regeneration and Economic Development, Cllr Jim O'Sullivan,
said: "We accept that not all recipients of
Incapacity Benefit will be in a position to return to work and we would emphasise that this programme is entirely voluntary. We would also stress that we will help residents find jobs which are suitable for their personal health conditions and requirements.
"It is clear that many people on Incapacity Benefit can become isolated and may wish to integrate more with their community by finding suitable work. This programme not only benefits these individuals; there are major benefits for the local economy as well.
"I hope many people come along to the jobs fair to find out about the help and support that is on offer, and I hope many will come away eager to get back to work."
