Britishness

Published: 23rd May 2007 14:57

Kayla Forde

Britishness is a real issue at the moment as are holidays at this time of year. And as ever, for those of us with young children, there's the old debate about traveling with children. Here're some thoughts to help you decide.

Reasons why the British seaside is better than going abroad

  • British beaches have a Zen like quality rarely found outside Japan. Think Brighton – think Japanese garden. Think pebbles, think instant dimples, think press on cellulite. Although it’s a little known fact that the Japanese don’t suffer from cellulite – not even the Sumo wrestlers, which can’t be unanimously said of the residents of Brighton.

  • Only in Britain can you be sure that the dog pooping on your 2 year old’s sandcastle is rabies free – can’t always vouch for the 2 year old.

  • The North’s better than the South
  • Only if you think that a fake tan, acrylic nails and a boob job for every pensioner are your birthright.

Another thing I've noticed travelling around the UK as a stand-up comedian is the incredible amount of different charity shops - Help the Aged/children/Roumanian pets/tortoises in conflict to name but a few -but they all look the same and have the same woman working there.

The application form for charity shop workers must include a questionnaire: “Are you over 70? Good. If you were to succeed in your application to join us, would you be willing to dress exclusively from our own clothes range? Good. Are you devoid of all interpersonal skills and - if hoping to work for an animal charity shop, do you own a small; yet vicious, dog that will follow customers round growling and passing wind? Good. And finally do you require facial hair extensions or would you be willing to supply your own? Excellent when can you start?

This of course excludes the NW10 area which is a watchword for style in all areas of life.
