An awards evening for the first nine men to complete Lewisham Council's pilot fitness programme, took place on Monday 3 December, at Ladywell Leisure Centre.
The awards evening, follows the launch of the report on men's health, ‘Lewisham's Men's Health Review', released on the November 21, which revealed the life expectancy for the Lewisham man is nearly two years less than the national average.
The programme, specifically designed, for men over 40, ran for eight weeks and included different exercise classes and health advise on nutrition, diabetes, hypertension, sexual health, relaxation, smoking and prostate cancer.
Cllr Alan Hall, Chair of the Men's Health Forum, said: "This fitness programme has been a huge success. It has been a challenge for some of the men and a learning experience for all involved.
"Lewisham men over 40 really need to build awareness of their own health and this programme is designed specifically for this. I'm really pleased to see it was such a success. I hope next year's course is just as successful."
This was the first of two free pilot programmes, the second of which is due to start in February-March 2008. Any Lewisham man wishing to take part in the second programme should phone 020 8314 8497.
