No Change at the Top - Liberals Hold Stockport
| Published: 2nd May 2008 08:33 |
Last night at the Town Hall saw little change in the balance of the political parties in Stockport with the Tories holding onto the two Bramhall Wards with Brian Bagnall and Linda Holt being duly elected.
The only shocks on the night proved to be the Tories gain of Cheadle & Gatley by the slim margin of just 17 Votes - the other being the Brinnington & Central Ward in which Labour lost to the Liberals.
The election papers arrived at 10.25pm and the first box to show were the papers from Neville Road School. The team of 11 counters took all the votes which were then sorted in bundles of 20s, then placed into packs of 100 and then checked against the ballot paper account which showed how many votes had been recorded from that polling station.
So, we were off to start on what turned out to be a very nerve racking evening especially for the candidates who were pacing the room overseeing the counting. In the background each political party had their unofficial counters who were overseeing that the teams were placing the ballot papers in the right piles for their candidate and not missing out on any votes.
The tension continued to build up as the night drew on and the room was heaving with party workers, local councillors and observers. It became very clear that the voting was going to be close with polling stations in certain areas favouring one candidate and then the next box would arrive and reverse the trend.
This was the second time that The Editor of AboutMyArea/SK7 had attended an ‘Election Night‘ and I have to say the pressure for all those involved started to reach fever pitch just before midnight when it became very clear indeed that the final results were resting on last box of voting papers.
At times during the year the rhetoric between the Conservatives and Liberal Democrat Party in Bramhall became difficult for the voters to understand, as both parties were taking the moral high ground on local issues, however the community can be rest assured that every councilor works extremely hard for the local electorate especially in the Bramhall area.
In the Bramhall wards there has been a good turnout and AboutMyArea/SK7 has tried to encourage the local community to go out to vote and we hope that in some small way we have achieved that aim. The overall turnout for Stockport was 37.1% whereas in Bramhall it was in the region of 49%.
AboutMyArea/SK7 has attended all the Bramhall Area Committee Meetings and Planning & Highways meetings since the website started last November and will continue to monitor the local political scene without fear or favour and the website will reflect "What is happening in Bramhall South, Bramhall North and Woodford Areas".
