Staircase House recently hosted a successful family event celebrating midsummer traditions from the last 500 years.
Stockport residents and people from outside the borough turned out in force to support the 'Midsummer Magic' event.
The event featured costumed characters giving advice on historic herbs and potions, believed to have cured toothache, cramps and even whiten the skin!
Visitors were invited to recreate midsummer traditions from all over the world using 'shadow theatre' techniques, including the Noc Swietojanska (St. John's Night) and wianki (wreaths) ceremonies from Poland.
Children were able to make their own sundials and have their face painted as any mystical creature they could think of.
The fun continued outside in the historic Market Place with a Punch and Judy show, whilst the costumed characters looked for willing volunteers to be placed in the Stocks.
Councillor Shan Alexander, Executive Member for Leisure, said: "I really enjoyed the day which was a fantastic success attracting many people from outside the borough as well as local residents. Of the people surveyed, a massive 68% of them were first time visitors and had planned a visit to Stockport specifically for this event. This shows that Stockport's culturally rich heritage has something to offer local residents and those living outside the borough. Well done to all those who organised this very successful event."
