Residents Consulted on Recycling

Published: 10th July 2008 12:21

Cllr Stuart Bodsworth (Executive member for the Environment)Cllr Stuart Bodsworth (Executive member for the Environment)

Stockport Council is making big changes to the way recycling and refuse is collected from households in the borough.

These changes will see the majority of homes in Stockport receiving wheelie bins to make it easier for them to recycle more of their waste.

However, there are some properties in the borough which may have access or storage issues so the Council is consulting a sample of 3,000 households to find out their views. These households have been provided with a questionnaire detailing three possible options for the way their waste is collected.

Councillor Stuart Bodsworth, Executive Member for the Environment, said: "The Council is committed to satisfying the public demand for improved recycling facilities and further reducing the amount of waste which is buried in landfill sites. That is why we are introducing the wheeled bins and expanding the range of recycling collected. The Council will do everything it can to help everyone recycle but in some places residents may have concerns about storing all the bins or the recycling lorries may not be able to gain access to the roads."

Changes to the Council's waste collection service will take place over the next few years. These changes will include a weekly food waste collection service which will assist in the drive to increase recycling.

If you have received a questionnaire in the post, please return it in the prepaid envelope by 25 July .

This questionnaire can also be found at www.stockport.gov.uk/content/councildemoc/council/contacts/consultation/haveyoursay/?a=5441

I think it's great that people are being consulted on this subject, and I think that the introduction of wheelie bins for recycling is a welcome step forward.
I am also excited by the prospect of weekly food waste collection service. We don't have space for composting so this will certainly help to cut down on our household waste - particularly during winter when it seems that our bin is half filled with vegetable peelings!

Kevin - I totally agree with you - I was one of the food caddy trial volunteers and I was well pleased with it - I kept the caddy next to the sink so when I peeled and washed my fresh fruit and veg it was done straight into the caddy. The caddy on occasion was left for a week or 2 and there were no nasty smells as you would have expected...the whole recycling process is pretty 'excitng' . We used to fill up 3 dustbins per week..we are down to one on average - we recycle everything at every opportunity - my kids even talk about 'ethical clothes shopping' and they are trying out charity shops for their summer holiday clothes..All of our decent throw aways are finding a place to go to - nothing is tipped at Adswood and even all that is carefully categorised into the correct section. It really is inspiring to know that much of what we throw out can be recycled be it food, clothes, furnitue, mobile phones, spectacles etc. It is a win-win situation for all of us - all it takes is a little planning so that each time we think what do we do with this - 9 times out of 10 - there is some way to hand to to someone who will recycle or reuse it.
Should anyone ever have a problem with recycling please do contact me - your editor at annatriantis@aboutmyarea.co,.uk and I will do my best to help you!
