The Cheadle Hulme Flower Show Society's 49th Annual Show
Once again a truly beautiful and picturesque flower show was held in Cheadle Hulme last Saturday.
Cheadle Hulme Allotments StandYour editor went along to see for herself and chatted to the Chairman Eddie Garrick and the treasurer Mr Frank Golds. Cheadle Hulme Flower Show Society is not just a flower club. They have a membership of 150! Many of these are older ladies for whom the highlight of the year is an annual holiday. This has been to Alnwick in the North East, (4 nights/5 day trip - full coach of 53 people), The South East to Sussex and Kent , abroad to Paris and to the Gardens of Dublin and Ireland. The trips are affordable and very popular. Apart from this the society has held various regular events this year. They meet at the Parish Rooms on Church Road in Cheadle Hulme starting at 7.30 and finishing at 9.30pm. New members are very welcome!
This year several events took place: the Holker Hall trip, A Social Evening in May, Open gardens, Trip to Dalemain House, Weekend in the North East, Talks by Mr K McManus on composting and propagation and the Southport Flower Show Visit.
Still to go is:
- the Peter Holden talk - "Grow it, pick it, cook it, eat it" on October 17th
- AGM - November 11th
- Christmas Social November 28th

The first Flower Show was held in 1960, to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the Parish Room, Church Road, and Cheadle Hulme. It was so successful that it continued to be staged annually by a small committee for the next 32 years.
Because the event was becoming too much for a small group to support and raise the necessary finance each year, a new constitution was written which changed the focus to that of a society, with membership, and a remit to provide that membership with talks, visits and other events and the proceeds to finance the Annual Show. This year will be our 49th Show.
Membership is open to all who share an interest, or passion, in gardening and currently we have approximately 150 members. During the winter period there are monthly talks on various garden related subjects, and in the summer visits to houses and gardens, Flower shows and, since becoming a Society, 4-6 day holidays in the UK and Europe.
Membership is £6 per annum; (people who joined at the flower show paid £2 up to the end of the year), people normally join after the AGM in November at Xmas time. Events are £3 to attend (£3.50 non-members).
