Be Safe Be Seen

Published: 7th October 2008 16:34

Road safety logoChildren in Stockport are being urged to stay visible on the roads when the clocks go back this winter, as part of the Council's annual 'Be Safe Be Seen' campaign.

The Council's Road Safety Team is working with children at Our Lady's Primary School, Edgeley throughout October, to produce road safety posters outlining the importance of wearing bright or reflective items when they walk to school. The winning poster design will then be placed on the Council's website and will be available for other schools to download. All children participating in the campaign will also receive a reflective badge to help them to be seen in during the darker morning and evenings.

Without wearing reflective items, children may only be visible at 30 metres away, in low beam headlights. By making sure that children wear reflective clothing enables them to be seen at 150 metres, giving drivers five times the distance to notice them and avoid an accident.

Councillor David White, Executive Member for Transportation, said: "The 'Be Safe Be Seen' campaign raises an important message for both young children and parents. By reminding children and parents of the importance of being seen after dark we are hoping to further reduce the number of accidents involving children.

"Although school uniforms are traditionally dark, we are also hoping that the campaign will improve children's road awareness as well as encouraging them to wear reflective/fluorescent strips, badges or arm bands."

Children who cycle to school can also take extra care by ensuring that their bike has a white front light and a red back light with a red reflector at the back.
