Stockport celebrates National science and Engineering week

Published: 1st March 2010 18:42
Stockport Visitor Attractions have put together a fantastic programme of free events to celebrate National Science and Engineering Week (NSEW) from 12th to 21st March.

National science and engineering logo

NSEW is a ten day programme of science, engineering and technology events and activities across the UK aimed at people of all ages, which is now in its 17th year.

The aim of the events organised by Stockport Council is to inspire families to think about science, recycling and history, whilst also encouraging people of all ages to explore and work together.

This year's theme for NSEW is ‘Earth' - to complement the International Year of Biodiversity. This includes everything from the Earth's amazing wildlife and people to its place in the Universe and how it works.

Motivated by this year's NSEW theme is the latest exhibition at Hat Works and Stockport Story Museum ‘Treasure from Trash', which celebrates creative recycling from around the world.

Stockport Visitor Attractions NSEW programme 2010 includes the following:

  • Family Robotics - this session requires nothing more than curiosity and an interest in building a real robot to take away. Held on Saturday 13th and 20th March at Stockport Art Gallery, from 2.00pm to 4.00pm. Suitable for ages 8+. Booking essential call 0161 474 4453.
  • Family Fun Day - explore the science behind Hat Works and experiment with recycling. Build a recycled model of the museum and find out why woolly jumpers shrink in a hot wash. Held on Sunday 14th March at Hat Works, from 1.00pm to 3.30pm. Suitable for all ages. For more information call 0161 355 7770.
  • Family Fun Day - join in some fun science and recycling activities. Enjoy a family science quiz, build a model of Stockport Story from recycled materials and, with inspiration from a visit to the ‘Treasure from Trash' exhibition get creative with plastic bags. On Sunday 21st March at Stockport Story Museum, from 1.00pm to 3.30pm. For more information call 0161 480 1460.
