Volunteers with the Community Bus on Friday in Oak Meadow Park
Some 30 young people arrived at the Cheadle Hulme Community Bus on Friday evening in Oak Meadow Park for the first ever meeting of its kind within the Cheadle Area.
The young people were clearly intrigued, pleased and happy with the Community Bus and the volunteers who like wise found their first evening of interaction with these young people an extremely positive experience were blissfully happy with the evening's event.
The purpose of the bus is to engage with young people aged 13 to 18, create a positive diversion for them and to give them a place to meet. The hope is that the young people will participate in the running of the community bus project and that after the pilot has finished that they will have helped to inform the organisers as to how the project should continue.
The community bus is in its pilot stage which will continue for a total of 4 more weeks on the next consecutive Fridays on 20th and 27thJune, 4th and 11th July from 7.30pm to 9pm with a barbecue being planned for the last night. Andy Settle (the bus manager) has agreed with some of the youths that if they turn up early next Friday, they could set up 5-a - side football. The plan for the girls is to put some mats down and to play games such as Jenga. There are DVD's and computer games on the bus with free tea and biscuits for all.
Volunteers who accompanied the bus for the evening included Andy Settle - the Salvation Army bus manager and his team, Julie Wharton (head of the Youth Workers), Paul Reddy and other members of the Cheadle Hulme Methodist Church, Trevlyn Thomas from All Saints in Cheadle Hulme and Anna Triantis your AboutMyArea/SK8 website editor.
More volunteers are encouraged to sign up for this worthy project, the only credentials being required are to have a heart for and care for young people. Training is given and CRB checks will be undertaken.
