Why on earth should there be conditions attached to the Department of Transport's investment in the area? It can only be because they see the congestion charge as a future money-spinner. The charge in London has penalised low-paid workers and created a mountain of (costly) bureacracy.
Better public transport would be more effective in reducing congestion than yet another tax on the motorist.

I'm all for improving public transport, but as the comment above mentioned, why is there always conditions attached? The poor motorist has enough to pay at the moment with rising fuel costs.
Glad to see that this website brings us such up to date news and information though!

First of all I am really pleased to see that there is to be investment in our area's transport infrastructure - I think this is much needed. But I certaintly don't think there should be any conditions attached such as a congestion charge. Surely the idea of improving public transport is to reduce congestion on the roads?

Yet again the motorists are getting punished despite wanting to put money into the local area. The London one is bad enough (it goes up tenfold if you forget to pay it). Put money into public tranport but leave the congestion charge out of it. If it is good enough people will use it.

I lived and worked in London until 2 years ago and the congestion charge really hits your pocket. It stops normal folk from going into the city centre as it is just too expensive. Public Transport does need the investment but I thought we all already paid for this through other means!
