76 days in your handbag!

Published: 8th October 2008 09:57
Woman with handbagRESEARCH REVEALS AVERAGE WOMEN SPEND 76 DAYS IN THEIR BAGS!

Psychologists claim its bad for your health

Bagatidy questioned women across the UK in its research. Its findings showed that these 76 days equates to the average woman spending four and a half minutes a day looking for essential items in her handbag.

What's more psychologists claim that all this rummaging has an impact on our health and its measured by something called the 'Daily Hassles Scale'. The boffins argue that it is this scale that is more useful when it comes to measuring your morale. The more hassle the greater the impact on well being.

The most commonly lost items, in order were:

1 Car/door Keys
2. Mobile phone/blackberry/pda
3. Lipstick and other make-up items
4. Perfume
5. Purse/Credit Card
6. Swipe card for work
7. Hairbrushes
8. Headache tablets
9. Kids toy/soother
10.Chewing gum or mints

The research also found that the contents of handbags are increasing.

Nowadays high-tech work gadgets, such as mobile phones, PDAs, device chargers, laptop computers and their cables, are now regular features for the first time in most women's bags.

Other work-related items includes bulky document files, security swipe cards, and a pair of smart shoes, with women walking to work in trainers before changing to a more business-friendly, fashionable style.

But despite changing lifestyles, the greatest percentage is still taken up by old handbag favourites such as make up, mirror, purse, tissues, perfumes, sanitary products, brushes, tooth paste receipts, address book and headache pills.

Books, magazines, brushes, perfume, keys, tube map, deodorants, contraceptive pills and lap salve still feature prominently.

Bagatidy also discovered that all this rummaging around, according to psychologists, could be bad for our health by creating unnecessary stress. The Life Event Scale measures things like divorce, death and moving house.

However there is also another measurement called The Daily Hassles Scale. This tracks smaller but irritating and frustrating demands that happen with 'everyday transactions with our environment.'

The same boffins who recognise both these scales argue that the latter is more useful in predicting the effect on you such as morale, psychological symptoms and somatic illness. In other words reduce the daily hassles in your life and its good for your mind and body.

"I think 'Bagatidy' will help women cope with the demands they encounter due to modern lifestyles. It's also safe to conclude that using it to reduce the daily little hassles we all encounter will benefit health in mind and in body, said Professor Patrick MacArtney, psychologist and sociologist, Leeds University.

The idea for Bagatidy comes from personal experience, Francine Cohen, one of the country's leading show business journalists and her friend Marcia Raynard whose work experience covers casting for Yorkshire TV were getting to the end of their tethers when it came to constantly looking for things in their bags. The solution they came up with was Bagatidy.

"Every single woman in the UK has been there, bag in hand, stood in the pouring rain frantically trying to find her car keys; or experienced that 'countdown moment' as she can hear her phone ringing but cant find it due to the clutter. "

"Well we decided enough was enough and have now brought an end to this frustration for women of the nation with Bagatidy", said Francine Cohen.
