Growing up at Stockport story
Guernsey Evacuees visit the Childhood exhibition
Stockport Story Museum is calling all children and those young at heart to visit its latest exhibition entitled 'Growing Up: The Story of Childhood'.
The exhibition, now on display, explores childhood through a variety of formats. Case studies focus on the lives of three Stopfordian children, Wilhelmina, Edith and John who lived in Stockport during different eras. Their stories follow the way they lived and the significant differences between living in Edwardian, Victorian and Wartime Stockport.
The change in attitude towards children and their treatment throughout history is a key theme of the exhibition, including the liberation from
child labour and the decrease in mortality rates.
Other lighter-hearted themes include holidays, clothes, toys and leisure.
Objects of interest on display include a Victorian highchair, pram and a
1940s baby weighing machine - all never displayed before.
Part of the exhibition is dedicated to the story of the Guernsey evacuees,
who were sent to the Stockport area during the Second World War at very
short notice. Included are audio clips of personal accounts from those
recounting their first experiences of Northern England and the differences
they encountered. For example many were amazed by black and white cows and
steam trains.
Objects donated by the Guernsey evacuees include original evacuation
posters, letters sent through the Red Cross between parents and children and
liberation medals awarded to children returning to Guernsey after the war.
Norman Hudson, Service Director for Regeneration and Leisure at Stockport
Council, said: "There is something to interest everyone in this fascinating
new exhibition. It tells the tale of childhood through stories, text panels
and audio clips aimed at children, as well as offering more in depth
information to interest older visitors which may even evoke some of their
own childhood memories."
The exhibition runs until 1st November, is open Tuesday to Saturday, from
10.00am to 5.00pm, Sunday 11.00am to 5.00pm and is FREE to visit.
