Wilmslow win History-Making Quadruple

Published: 19th May 2008 15:50

Lacrosse StickWILMSLOW are celebrating sweet success having won a history-making four titles this season By Neil Goulding

No other club in the history of English Lacrosse has ever won a quadruple title-haul.

But the on-song Cheshire side, who had already won the Northern Premier League and Senior Flags titles this term, beat southern double winners Hampstead 17-9 at the weekend to win the Wilkinson Sword and Iroquois Cup.

"It's a fantastic achievement from the team, no one could have ever imagined we'd ever have as successful a season," praised Wilmslow chairman Clive Perrin.

"Winning the league and Senior Flags was a great achievement, but to win two more titles is the icing on the cake for us. It's been a wonderful season."

Indeed it has and, despite trailing 4-3 to Hampstead, Wilmslow were never in danger of losing at Warwick University - the match played at a neutral venue.

Former England attacker Chris Mountney and current England international star Mark Reynolds both weighed in with four goals each as Wilmslow led 9-4 at half time.

They won the third quarter 3-1 and edged the final quarter 5-4 to deservedly add to make it a bulging trophy cabinet.

Talented youngster Mike Jordan starred by winning 23 of 25 face-offs, as well as scoring a goal. A hat-trick from Tommy Foster, two goals from James Perrin and Robert Messenger and a single goal from John Mountney completed the scoring.

"I can't praise the team enough, they've been wonderful this season," added Perrin. "Everyone at Wilmslow Lacrosse Club is buzzing with what we've achieved this season, it's been a long time coming."

The Iroquois Cup, which first came to prominence in 1896, was designed to be awarded for the "The Champion Lacrosse Club of England". The Northern and Southern Senior Flags winners annually contest the title.

Meanwhile, the Wilkinson Sword was introduced for the Northern and Southern Premier League winners to battle it out at the end of the season to see who is the best team in the country.

It just so happened this that both clubs played each other in a one-off match for both titles, with the chance of a memorable quadruple up for grabs.
