To mark the annual event the Council and Age Concern Stockport are holding a 'managing money' day at the Pop-In Centre, 8-16 Lower Hillgate, Stockport, from 10.00am to 2.00pm.
'UK Older People's Day' is an opportunity to celebrate the huge contribution older people make to society and the economy. It is also a time to raise awareness of the opportunities and entitlements for older people to ensure they don't feel excluded or isolated and promote a positive view of later life that tackles outdated stereotypes.
At this time of rising energy bills and credit crunch, the focus of the day will be around managing money. There will be a range of useful information available about maximising income, claiming benefits people may be entitled to, handling debts and energy efficiency in the home. There will also be business support advice for any over 50s silver entrepreneurs who are thinking of setting up their own business.
In addition to the full range of stalls at the event there will also be an information stand at Sainsbury's in the town centre from 10.00am to 2.00pm.
Cllr Maggie Clay, Executive Member for Adult Services, said: "I am delighted that older people in Stockport will have the opportunity to go along for free, confidential advice on how to balance their budgets. Trained advisers from Stockport Council's Welfare Rights Service will be on hand to guide people through a whole host of financial information to help find the right solution to any financial problems they may be experiencing."
Margaret Brade, Chief Executive of Age Concern Stockport, said: "I would encourage local people to take advantage of the free general and specialist financial advice and services offered by Age Concern Stockport and Stockport Council at any time, but particularly on this day when it is conveniently together in one place. I hope many people come along on UK Older People's Day to find out all that is available to help them manage their money."
