An Entrepreneurial Spirit in Stockport

Published: 27th September 2008 13:07
Following the success of last year's 'Silver Entrepreneurs' initiative in Stockport, the popular programme is being extended into 2009 to offer further free information and workshop sessions.

Silver Entrepreneurs With over 20% of Stockport's population aged between 50 and 69 years old, more of the borough's older residents are taking the plunge into business and setting up their own company after a lifetime working for others.

The Council launched 'Silver Entrepreneurs' in January 2007 with the aim of giving people over 50 years of age the opportunity to find out more about starting up in business or becoming self employed.

Through a series of information and workshops sessions, run by Ideopolis International, over 70 people have attended the workshops and 14 new small businesses have already been launched.

Councillor Kevin Hogg, Executive Member for Regeneration, at Stockport Council, said: "Given a major shift in the population age in the UK as a whole and in Stockport, we are witnessing the over 50s becoming increasingly important, not only in number, but in economic power and their ability to shape the economy. The Silver Entrepreneurs project is an excellent way to tap into the knowledge and experience of our mature residents."

Professor Tom Cannon from Ideopolis, added: "People are now living longer, staying healthier and, in many cases, seeking new outlets for their energies. This is an important initiative for Stockport Council, giving people over the age of 50 the help and encouragement they need to take the first steps to becoming successful entrepreneurs."

The Silver Entrepreneurs scheme will be running new information and workshop sessions between 30th September 2008 and 31st March 2009 for Stockport residents, aged over 50, who have a business idea or would like to start up their own business.

Sessions will take place at Staircase House, 30 Market Place, Stockport SK1 1ES. Advance booking is essential.
