10th Heald Green Festival Art competition winners
| Published: 3rd July 2008 23:31 |
This year - the 10th Heald Green Festival had a primary schools colouring competition for each age group, with the theme being the Olympic Games at Beijing - there were some interesting and colourful entries! The paintings were judged by Judith Durrant, a local Heald Green Artist who also made comments as displayed beneath each winning picture below. The winners of the competition are all pupils primary schools in Heald Green and had 2 age groups - Older children aged 9-11 and younger aged below age 9.
Photos taken by your editor and with the youngest group winners first.
First Iyza Butt aged 6
I have chosen this because Iyza has worked very carefully indeed with crayons and this in not as easy as people might think to do. I also like the fact that she has used her imagination and shown a happy runner in the sunshine, a canoeist paddling his canoe in the water and perhaps the swimmer is performing in the triathlon rather than in the baths because the water looks quite choppy and there are clouds in the sky. He will then have to get out of the water, ride a bicycle and then run a long way! Likewise the gymnast is clearly performing on a mat. Congragulations Iyza - very well done.
Second - Jack Stelfox aged 6. I have chosen this painting because Jack has decided to paint the whole picture and again has done very well indeed because he has use water based paints and covered the area very smoothly. The bright colours he has used glow on the paper, all the Olympic rings are different in colour and he has thoroughly shown differing colours of hair and vests of the competitors. Again - well done Jack
Third place - Hashain Ali - I love the bright colours Hashain has used - the orange particularly makes the various competitors stand out in their rings. This young child clearly likes "spot the difference" books at the moment and it took me a little while to find out what it was! I wonder whether I have got it right! I like too the fact that Hashain has shown the different symbols and colours of the vests of the competitors which identify the country they are representing. A lovely effort from such a young child.
Alexander Argylle aged 11 - This is a lovely interpretation of the international excitement of the Olympic Games. Alexander has made the running track the focus with the athletes clearly enjoying the competition and wearing their different vests with pride. I love the happy smiling faces of all the spectators - what hairstyles! I love too the people looking at one another - some waving their national flags as well as the Olympic flag. She has put an enormous amount of thought and work into this. It makes me wish I could be there. Very well done Alexandra.
Second Place George Burslem age 11 - I have chosen this because it would make a good poster advertising the Olympics. George has put in the Olympic Flame and shows the winning Gold & Silver Medals. The joy of the competitor pole-vaulting successfully over the bar is great and I get a real sense of a high flyer who is thrilled to be competing in the greatest competition in the world. This is a simple idea and it has worked well. Congragulations George.
Third - Gabrielle Naughton aged 10 - this is a very crisp but descriptive piece of work showing just one event. I like the podium and the gold, silver and bronze medals waiting to be won. We know which ring the competitors are in and there is a real sense of action going on between the 2 girls. Again a clever idea Gabrielle and nicely done.
