Summary of meeting on Wednesday 2nd July 2008
Chair welcome Lenny Grice the newly elected councillor for Cheadle Hulme South.
Waitrose - update 1 year on
Steve Long of Waitrose Supermarket in Cheadle Hulme gave a presentation on how things are now one year one since Waitrose opened up in Cheadle Hulme.
Waitrose have won the Grocer 33 award within their 8th year of opening for their customer Services which seems to be way ahead of the competition. They have also improved much of their fresh food offering and source locally. Waitrose are doing a project ‘Community Matters'. At every check out customers will receive a token and choose out of three different Charity boxes to put their token in. £1000 will be split between the 3 charities each month in proportion to how many tokens each charity has received during that month. Each month Waitrose's' employees will decide which charity to support.
Security Issues
- there have been 6 break-ins recently and in all except for one, cigarettes were the target. Since then they have installed a rolling kiosk which gets rolls away and is locked up every night and as a result there have been no more break ins. Security shutters and other security devices have been fitted too. They have a good relationship with the local police to whom they will give free coffee and breakfast and this can be extended to the ranger at the meeting's request
Going forward - the credit crunch is biting and as seen with M& S they expect sales to be down. Recession can be seen in footfall and weekly sales and this could last for the next 2 years.
There is some discussion of a Cafe sometime in the future to be built into the Waitrose store, but as this will be extremely expensive to do, Steve Long could not promise for certain.
There will be an ATM standalone unit by the front door which is nothing to do with Waitrose.
Cheadle Hulme Action Plan
Station Road Landscaping - Chair discussed the Action Pan which firstly covered tree planning on Station Road, but having investigated this, they cannot be planted due to underground services and some strip of land outside the shops are privately owned by shops. Some members complained that many of the pavements outside of shops in Cheadle Hulme are in a state of disrepair.
The fencing that surrounds the Conservative Club needs to be repaired.
Library - should there be an extra storey and some new carpeting provided. Apparently this is the second busiest library in Stockport.
Smithy Grove - main interest for businesses and people there is the need for short term parking.
Climate Change - Richard Watson spoke about the Climate change Bill in parliament at the moment - he said that paying other countries for our Carbon Footprint will not solve the problem and that there is a need for a real domestic effort in this direction. Stuart Bodsworth mentioned that we cannot participate in the Transition Towns therefore Stockport will be going with another 'Environment Body'. Also can we all recycle more?
Car Park Issues
In the recent consultations Cheadle Hulme North had no objections but Cheadle Hulme South did. The Cheadle Hulme South proposals have to go to Bramhall area committee on 31st July, and even though the money is allocated to do Cheadle Hulme North (Cheadle Area committee on 29th July); Residents have to wait for Cheadle Hulme South to be agreed.
Cheadle Hulme Station - no news from network rail - perhaps August?
Oak Meadow Party in the park was a huge success and they have some people already booked for next year. Bulb planting will be on October 25th and Carols in the park on 20th December- Joyce to submit written request to Waitrose for their sponsorship of this event.
No Planning applications.
Trevor Mobbs is moving to Cumbria but he may be here still on 10th September. Chair thanked him for his help and hospitality.
There is to be a family fun day on Saturday (Cheadle Methodist Church) 12th July at Lane End field on Ramillies.
Paul Reddy did not arrive before the end of the meeting so the Community Bus discussion was deferred to the next meeting.
Next meetings to take place on 10th September and 12th November
