Christmas Card Recycling Scheme is a Massive Success

Published: 13th March 2008 20:09

Christmas Card Recycling Scheme is a Massive Success

A bus load of Christmas cards were recycled during January, thanks to the efforts of Stockport schoolchildren.

Thirty-eight Stockport schools took part in the Council's Christmas Card Recycling scheme collecting 772,352 cards, which is equivalent to a single decker bus.

For every tonne of card collected 17 trees are saved in the UK and the Woodland Trust, who organise the scheme nationally, have awarded eight trees to the three schools that collected the most cards.

Lisburne Lane School in Offerton was awarded first prize, collecting a massive 82,046 cards. The school won £100 from Hortons Waste Paper and three new trees to plant in their grounds.

Second prize went to Ladybrook Primary who collected 64,446 cards winning £75 and Pownall Green won the third prize collecting 44,415 cards receiving £25. Both schools also received two trees.

In addition to this, all three schools will receive recycled plastic pencils and books on the history of Stockport. A special certificate from the Woodland Trust celebrating the efforts made will be given to every school that took part.

 Planting a Tree

The Council also offered free Christmas tree recycling in January. This scheme saw 813 trees being shredded into mulch, which will now be reused in many of the borough's parks.

Pictured is Councillor Stuart Bodsworth with pupils from Lisburne Lane School planting a tree.

Councillor Stuart Bodsworth, Executive Member for the Environment, said: "Well done to all the schools who took part in this scheme but a big congratulations to Lisburne Lane School for all their hard work. This initiative is an excellent way for children to learn about recycling and to understand how they can make Stockport a cleaner and greener place to live.
They will be able to see the benefits of their hard work everyday as the trees they plant grow.

"The cards they have collected means nine tonnes less of waste going to landfill. These cards have all been taken to Romiley Board Mill where they will be made into cardboard tubes. It is really encouraging to see so many residents making an effort to recycle."
